Virginia-based Jazz singer Catherine Carraway performs a vibrant mix of international music with a distinctively luxurious tone and subtle phrasing.
Self-trained, she credits her extensive range and repertoire to practicing along with her recordings of Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, and foreign vocalists like Edith Piaf, Astrud Gilberto, and Omara Portuondo. Her music knows no borders: she draws from timeless favorites and obscure gems in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese -- some of the world's most evocative songs, regardless of origin. Since forming her own quartet in 2002 with guitarist Peter Richardson, bassist Bob Bowen, and drummer Drex Weaver, she has rapidly gained a following in the region, playing notable venues such as Blues Alley in Washington, DC, and events such as Southwest Virginia's Black Dog Jazz Fest, Charlottesville's First Night Virginia, and DC's Live on Woodrow Wilson Plaza.
